“Oh, um, hello.” He looked around nervously. There was a small outbreak of whispering and he sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “Miss Lebeau? I just wanted to come and wish you luck with the business.”

Rhiannon drew him further into the bookshop, tucking her arm in his and making it clear he was welcome and she didn’t think he was a killer. Morgana wasn’t quite so sure. He’d said something to her she’d known was wrong, but she had yet to work out what it was. She regarded him suspiciously while at the same time looking around for Valeria, but Valeria was gone.

“I brought you a present, well, the same present. Your friend mentioned yours was cut up or something?” He held a gold satin scarf out to Rhiannon tentatively, as though not entirely sure she’d want it. But Rhiannon was delighted and immediately added it to the collection already hanging around her neck.

“That’s so kind, Mr. Dawson. I was really upset when mine was destroyed.” Rhiannon lowered her voice as she continued talking and Morgana surmised she was telling him about Valeria.

He didn’t stay long, just enough time to be given a quick tour of the store front and to drink an orange juice. As he turned to go, another woman who’d come in just behind him stopped him by the door.

From the sofa, Morgana watched with interest as she addressed him. “Archie, it’s been weeks since I’ve seen you, are you feeling any better?” The woman was in her thirties, with long tousled curls Morgana envied. She wore a lot of make-up but was undeniably pretty.

“I have good days and bad days, Jen. Today is not great so I’m going home again now but thank you for asking.” He gave her a smile almost transforming his face, and Morgana suddenly saw a glimpse of why women found him attractive. She also had to admit he did look rather pale. Quite possibly, this was the first time in years he’d been back to the place that had once been Valeria’s boutique.

Mr. Dawson slipped out of the door and the woman watched him go, frowning as she did. After a moment of apparent indecision, she accepted a Champagne flute from Lucy and began to wander around the shop, browsing the books.

“Who is that?” Morgana asked Ellie.

“That’s Jennifer Penwyn. She lives in Pixie Cove. Why?”

“She was talking to Archie Dawson. Maybe she was one of his alleged women?”

“Really?” Ellie looked doubtful. “She’s a lot younger than Archie, she was probably just being friendly to him. I think she works at the Cliff Hotel. Greg and I went there for a spa day, and I saw her serving the afternoon tea. She used to live in Portmage with an aunt or something, but I haven’t seen her in the village for ages. Still, everyone likes books, right?”

“Hmm, I don’t suppose you’ve also seen Belinda, the barmaid from the Fisherman’s Rest?”

“I have actually,” Ellie said, making Morgana sit bolt upright. “She’s by the door.”

Morgana instantly spotted Belinda.
